Flatsharing: A contemporary answer to the housing crisis

Flatsharing, long established in Europe’s largest capitals, is now gaining ground in Greece.

Flatsharing: A contemporary answer to the housing crisis

Renting a house in Greece, particularly in major cities and popular tourist areas has become one of the biggest challenges of modern life. For young people, students or early-career professionals, moving out of the family home is no longer a natural step toward adulthood; for many it feels more like a privilege or even a luxury.

The housing crisis in numbers

The numbers speak for themselves. Recent Eurostat data show that Greeks spend an average of 35.2% of their disposable income on housing, almost double the European average of 19.7%. At the same time, 31% of Greeks are considered overburdened by housing costs according to European standards, while the corresponding indicator in Europe stands at just 10.6%. Perhaps most concerning, nearly half of Greek households (47.3%) report having to delay payments for rent, mortgages, or utility bills, compared with a European average of only 9.3%. With inflation rising rapidly and wages struggling to keep up, one question becomes unavoidable: What is a realistic way forward?

Flatsharing: A new era of urban living

Flatsharing has long been a popular living model in major European capitals such as London, Berlin, Paris, and Madrid, offering lower housing costs, greater flexibility, and for many, a more social and balanced lifestyle. In Greece, flatsharing, although historically approached with caution, is now steadily gaining traction; Today, 57.5% of Greeks say they would consider a flexible co-living arrangement, whereas over 35,000 people are already active in flatsharing groups on social media, searching for flatmates or rooms to rent.

Flatpulse: Making finding the right flatmate easy and safe

Flatpulse is a new flatsharing platform designed to make finding the ideal flatmate simple, fast and completely secure for everyone, anywhere in Greece. Using the platform is straightforward. First, create your Flatpulse account and fill out your flatmate form with key information about yourself and the room you are either seeking or offering. While waiting for interested users to reach out, you can browse available flatsharing opportunities posted on the platform. When you find one that suits your needs, you can share your contact details (email, social media, or phone) with the person who posted the listing and if they are interested, they will get in touch to discuss the details further.
